Why Learn Music Online?

Online classes and private instruction are carefully designed to be engaging and effective - both during the lesson and between lessons. Much of what will contribute to a students success is what they do between lessons when students are practicing and completing assignments.  The online program is developed to encourage, motivate and enable students when practicing at home.  When structured well, online learning can be an effective, multimodal learning experience.

    Multimodal Learning

The ideal learning environment couples the right tools with the right teacher and provides for timely and consistent feedback.  Ease of access to the learning materials is also important.   Parents will be happy to learn students can access their lessons online easily without any files being sent via email.

I have found that combining recorded supplemental materials with a weekly “live” online lesson works well.  This allows students to get the necessary instruction and then to  refer back to their support materials throughout the week. Students will also have the opportunity to receive feedback/input from me between lessons.

Registered students will receive login information where they can access all of their materials. Online materials will consist of the following elements:  Overview, Notation, Audio, Video, and Whiteboard Tab.   What follows are examples of each of the possible tabs from one lesson.

1) The Overview Tab. This is where students will see my notes on what should be accomplished during the week.  Here is an example:

2) The Notation tab. This is where students will find any music they need to access outside of their regular hard copy books (Pdfs, XML files).  Notes from the lessons can be saved on the music as a reminder during the practice sessions.

3) The Audio tab. Students can use this tab to practice with the included metronome, or record themselves playing either as a soloist or with recorded tracks (duets and ensembles).  Each color represents a track in the example below.

4) The Video tab. Students can access any recorded lesson materials in this tab.  Students can also use this tab to record themselves performing.  And if they want to share their performances they can be added to our private (members only) Facebook Group.   You may recognize these hands.
